John founded J. Smyth Design in January of 2006, when he decided to leave the world of corporate architecture to pursue his passion for residential architecture full-time.
Prior to forming the company, John worked as a senior designer at a number of select design firms in Washington D.C. and Atlanta, including Gensler, Skidmore Owings & Merrill, and Hendrick Inc. As an architect, he has over 20 years of experience in residential and commercial architecture and an extensive knowledge of the design and construction industries, from concept to completion.
A passion for residential architecture and, in particular, the resurgence and re-beautification of Atlanta's intown neighborhoods is reflected in John’s work in such communities as Collier Hills, Peachtree Battle (where he is a resident), Peachtree Hills, Virginia Highlands, Morningside, Druid Hills, Grant Park, Inman Park, Kirkwood, Oakhurst (Decatur) and East Lake (Decatur).
John holds a B.S. degree in Architecture from the Georgia Institute of Technology (“GA Tech”) and a Master of Architecture degree from Virginia Tech. He is accredited with the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB).
